chattra’s craft partner for this beautiful artisan zafu is Awamaki, a fair-trade co-operative working with women weavers of the Sacred Valley of Peru. Awamaki invests in skill development and connects women weavers to markets, enabling them to bring prosperity to their rural villages. Oat, cream, yellow hand-woven vegetable dye wool panel and strap on black 100% cotton canvas base with fun accent tassel. Buckwheat hull fill contours to body.
Andean women weave with a traditional back-strap loom strapped around the waist and back and anchored to a wall or tree. Portable, the loom allows them to create textiles while overseeing livestock or supervising children (or both!). The women weavers create their own ‘pallay’ — the Quechua language word for intricately woven design — finding inspiration in their natural surroundings.
chattra journeyed in Peru with Awamaki to the Patacancha and Huillot villages where we learned from and wove with the local Quechua women. Passing on traditional textile techniques and cultural heritage is important to the indigenous peoples of the Andes: children begin learning to spin raw fiber into yarn, warp looms, and to create natural dyes at a young age.
