Layers of re-purposed cotton and silk saris and dohtis are hand-stitched to create a soft, lovely texture and weight...a beautiful, one-of-a-kind yoga and meditation blanket quilt.
Thousands of tiny stitches! The sewing technique used to create Nakshi Kantha quilts originated with Bengali housewives who mend old clothes with a running stitch using strands of thread taken from their colorful sari borders. From Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, Kanthas (also known as Bengali Ralli Blankets) are crafted from re-purposed cotton and silk saris and men’s dhoti wraps layered and hand-sewn using this simple sewing technique. Textured and lightweight, each is a unique creation of color and pattern.
Traditionally used as light blankets or throws, especially for children, Kantha quilts are lovely at the foot of a bed, over a favorite chair, for warmth during Savasana, or a bit of padding in asana. We love the modern sensibility of this traditional textile.
