On a trip to Chiapas in southern Mexico, we visited the small town of Chamula. In the church on the zocalo, a creative approach to confession is practiced: images of saints line the walls, each with a small mirror in front. The practice: approach a saint, look in the mirror, and speak what you came to confess. Speak to your reflection, to your self.…in other words, “own” your thoughts, your actions, your words.
In the local market outside the church, women sell their beautifully embroidered, hand-loomed 100% wool shawls. We picked up this one-of-a-kind ivory with rainbow embroidery/fringe textile. Made in Chiapas, Mexico. Available online only.
