Authentic, one-of-a-kind folk art dowry purses are handmade by the women of the nomadic banjara tribe, originally of Gujuart and Rajasthan, India. Crafted of natural dyes, extensive appliqué and embroidery, mirror work, vintage coins, beads and tassels, each richly-colored purse is unique to the woman who made it, showcasing the maker’s design and stitching skills. Used for jewels, gold, silver jewelry and other valuables. The Banjara name is derived from the word bajika, which means trade or business, and from banji, meaning peddler’s pack. Would be beautiful in a simple floating frame.
