Awamaki Sky Pouch is crafted of naturally dyed, hand-woven alpaca wool; it's great for mat-side storage of your phone, studio card, money, keys, yoga strap. Hand woven and sewn in Peru. 100% wool, fully lined, leather strap, 7.5" x 5", pompom. Spot clean.
Awamaki, chattra’s craft partner for this beautiful, artisan pouch, is a fair-trade co-operative working with women weavers of the Sacred Valley of Peru; they invest in skill development and connect women weavers to markets, enabling them to bring prosperity to their rural villages.
Andean women weave with a traditional back-strap loom strapped around the waist and back and anchored to a wall or tree. Portable, the loom allows them to create textiles while overseeing livestock or supervising children (or both!). The women weavers create their own ‘pallay’ — the Quechua language word for intricately woven design — finding inspiration in their natural surroundings. Divine in any home practice or studio interior.
While recently in Peru, chattra journeyed with Awamaki to the Patacancha and Huillot villages where we spent time learning from and weaving with the local Quechua women. Passing on traditional textile techniques and cultural heritage is important to the indigenous peoples of the Andes: children begin learning to spin raw fiber into yarn, warp looms, and how to create natural dyes at a young age.
