Our hand-block printed Indigo Mehndi Market Tote is fashioned after shopping totes common in Indian bazaars -- with lots of space (and two pockets!) to carry meditation or retreat essentials or daily shopping.
Artisans hand-block print chattra Market Totes in richly colored prints inspired by the architecture of India's historical palaces, forts and temples, textiles, and spiritual practices. Crafted in ethical workshop in India using traditional techniques.
Indigo Mehndi Market Tote’s print is inspired by the decorative skin art created on hands, feet and arms during Hindu festivals and weddings. The use of mehndi (from the Sanskrit word mendhikā) and haldi (turmeric paste stain) is described in the earliest Hindu Vedic ritual books; it symbolizes the outer and inner sun, representing the Vedic idea of awakening the inner light.
Hand-block printed in lovely indigo blue; illuminating orange piping; contrasting inner and outer pockets; adorned with a colorful tassel like those seen on the camels of Rajasthan's great Thar desert.
The artisan's hand work is revealed in each chattra textile, including print density and block alignment; imperfections are characteristic and add to the charm of this traditional technique.
