There is nothing as lovely and versatile as a hand-spun, hand-woven cashmere shawl -- especially this one crafted by the Bharti family in Nepal. I first met the Bhartis at a cultural and handicrafts fair near New Delhi and then visited their Kathmandu-based workshop where the Ghandi chakra is used to spin fine wool gently gathered from the underside of young goats roaming the high-plains of Mongolia and Tibet. The spun wool is then woven on a hand-loom and dip-dyed for color. The spinning, weaving and dying process takes many hours per shawl.
I love the simplicity and warmth of the Bhartis’ shawls and always pack one when traveling. They’re wonderful as a wrap for meditation, a layer for Savasana, a cozy blanket for my young daughter. Their beauty and softness endure like new even after years of use.
These photos are from my visit to the Barthi family spinning, weaving and dying workshop in Kathmandu.
