This beautiful mat bag is named for Alchi, a hamlet high in the Indian Himalayas. Alchi is home to a small, 900-year old Buddhist monastery. This temple complex has some of the best-preserved examples of Buddhist art, from walls covered with hundreds of small seated Buddhas to weathered paintings of ikat fabric decorating the ceilings. A coveted commodity along Asia’s great Silk Road, the skill and time required to dye and weave ikat is so revered in some cultures it is believed the cloth is imbued with magical powers.
